Education trip at Giswati Mukura National Park GMNP on 07/05/2025

 

Since September 2024, Roots & Shoots Rwanda has been implementing a project titled “Enhancing Eastern Chimpanzee Habitat Protection through Conservation Awareness in Schools Neighboring Gishwati-Mukura National Park.” The project aims to raise awareness about the conservation of the endangered Eastern chimpanzee, whose population is under threat due to illegal human activities. The initiative involves students from E.P Umubano, G.S Bitenga B, and G.S Nyabirasi TSS—schools located in Ruhango and Nyabirasi sectors of Rutsiro District, in the Western Province of Rwanda.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN DAY AND INTERNATIONAL WORLD DAY

Roots & Shoots Rwanda joined in the celebration of International Children’s Book Day and Earth Day with students aged 7 to 10 years from Kigali Christian School. The event was organized by the Africa Leadership University Writing Centre in collaboration with the African Baby Book Project, under the theme Cultivating Literate Leaders Through the Magic of Stories.
The event aimed to bridge the literacy gap by showcasing children’s stories and encouraging young learners to engage with literature that reflects their own cultures and experiences.

COMMEMORATING 1994 GENOCIDE AGAINST TUTSI AT NYAMATA GENOCIDE MEMORIAL SITE

Roots & Shoots Rwanda joined the nation in commemorating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Nyamata Genocide Memorial. Upon arrival, the group was welcomed by Eric, who explained the memorial’s historical significance. He noted that UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site on September 20, 2023, due to the powerful evidence it holds of the atrocities committed during the genocide against Tutsi in April 1994.

CLEAN AND COLLECT PLASTIC WASTE AT THE EDGES OF KARAGO LAKE IN NYABIHU DISTRICT.

Roots & Shoots Rwanda, in collaboration with the INES Environmental Club, joined the Nyabihu Ecosystem Conservation Agency and several environmental clubs from the University of Rwanda – College of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Science (CAFF) in a cleanup activity along the shores of Karago Lake in Nyabihu District. Together, we collected plastic waste and contributed to preserving the local environment. Later, we also took the opportunity to inspire and encourage young people to take action in support of conservation. The activity was successfully completed!
 

UNILAK CLEANING

Roots & Shoots Rwanda participated in a community cleaning activity organized by the UNILAK Terra Care Club on February 29th, 2025. The initiative aimed to encourage and inspire students to take responsibility in protecting and preserving the environment at individual level.

ROOTS & SHOOTS RWANDA CELEBLATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Roots & Shoots Rwanda, in collaboration with the INES Environment Club and the Natural Guardian Club, celebrated International Women’s Day by building kitchen gardens for vulnerable single women in Rwambogo Cell. The activity was conducted under the theme:
“Women in Action for the Prevention of Malnutrition.”
As part of the initiative, fruit trees such as avocado, papaya, and tree tomatoes were planted, along with vegetables including amaranthus, carrots, and cabbage. The kitchen gardens aim to promote food security and improve nutrition for the women and their households.
