About R&S Rwanda

Roots & Shoots Rwanda is a Non-Profit Organization and a part of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots global network which is focused on making positive change happen in our communities, for animals and for the environment. Roots & Shoots was founded by Jane Goodall, DBE in 1991 with the goal of bringing together youth from preschool to university age and communities in prone areas to work on environmental conservation and Environmental sustainability. Some of our key activities in R&S Rwanda is to conduct environmental projects, restoring forests, and climate change mitigation and adaptation projects.

Our Mission

To foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for animals, people, and the environment.

Our Story

R&S Rwanda started its activities in February 2020. Yet becomes more
active in February 2021 due to Covid-19.

Our official office is located at Remera Kanombe Road, Kucyamitsingi, KN 5 Rd, Kigali. It serves as the central hub for all our administrative and operational activities. 

At the moment, R&S Rwanda has 55 volunteers who are coordinating activities among environmental clubs in 16 school institutions (7 primary schools, 6 secondary schools and 3 universities).

What We Do

Our primary goals

  1. Increase awareness of Environmental sustainability, climate change and its effects on the environment and human health.
  2. To promote Environmental Education Program for students in schools throughout environmental clubs
  3. To educate community about nature and environmental and ways to reduce their carbon footprint and help mitigate climate change.
  4. To lobby for policies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow the rate of climate change.
  5. To support and participate in research on Ecosystem, environmental sustainability ; and climate change.
  6. To work with other environmental organizations to promote solutions Environmental sustainability

Roots & Shoots is the global youth program of the Jane Goodall Institute. The Roots & Shoots program is comprised of thousands of young people of all ages inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall to make the world a better place.

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and students in Dar es Salaam, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots (JGR&S) is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals and for the environment.

Today, Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian program, with groups in more than 100 countries.

Empowering Rural Communities in Rwanda with Sustainable Agroforestry Practices

Aims to empower youth and communities to improve livelihoods and environmental conservation through restoration and better land and water management while raising climate change awareness by training and sensitizing local people on sustainable forest management.

Protecting Eastern Chimpanzee Habitats Through School-Based Conservation in Gishwati-Mukura

Aiming to foster chimpanzee conservation by raising awareness through educational materials and Gishwati-Mukura National Park experiences, allowing students to experience wildlife habitats firsthand while engaging in multiple activities that protect chimpanzee environments and their ecosystems.

EVERGREEN Project in Rwanda: A Psychoeducation Project

Aiming to provide students and club leaders in R&S clubs with access to concrete social and emotional skills which enabling them to develop a vocabulary and level of comfort with mental health topics, and encouraging them to care for themselves, others, and the natural world around them.
